Membership

Section 1. Membership in this association shall be limited and restricted to those persons prescribed as follows:
A. Voting Membership shall include:
1. County Veterans Service Officers. County Veterans Service Officer is defined as any person employed by or funded by any county, parish, borough, territory, or Native American Nation, whose job it is to assist veterans and their dependents in applying for benefits, administration of programs, or receipt of federal, state, or county veterans’ benefits. 2. Service Officers in states where there are no County Veterans Services Officers. Anyone recognized by a state’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs (or similar body, regardless of title) who represents or assists veterans and their dependents in locations where there are no active County Veterans Service Officer programs. 3. State Associations. Any state association of County Veterans Service Officers, regardless of the association’s title, that is recognized by that state’s Department of Veteran Affairs.
B. Non-Voting Members include:
1. Associate Members. Associate membership may be granted to any persons or groups who share a common interest in veteran affairs, but who are not County Veterans Service Officers, upon receipt of an application and payment of the prescribed annual dues. 2. Honorary Members. Honorary Membership may be conferred on any person so elected to receive such membership at the annual meeting of the association by a simple majority vote of the membership present. This is a lifetime award. 3. Retired Members. Retired membership may be granted to any person who was previously employed in a position as defined in paragraph A 1 or 2 of this article who applies for such membership and pays the prescribed annual dues. 4. Affiliate Members. Affiliate Membership may be granted upon receipt of a membership application and verification of the applicant’s qualifications to any person who:
a. Is accredited with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and b. Is employed as an National Service Officer, Department Service Officer, or State Veterans Service Officer whose place of work may be located at a VA Regional Office, and c. Agrees to process the claims for claimants who select NACVSO as the Claimant’s representative.
5. Complimentary Membership may be granted annually upon a majority vote of the Executive Board to anyone who serves in a position to influence the outcome of federal legislation or influence the decisions of leaders within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Many states now have a Membership Committee Member who is responsible for printing and mailing membership cards to the NACVSO Members from their state. If you have questions about your membership card, contact the person indicated on the chart below. If your question involves your membership status, then you will need to contact Jim Golgart, Debbie Pierson or Gary Chalupa.
